Chairman's Corner

AKA!

Ravi Ramakantan

Full sleeved white coat

Furiously pressing the button

10 past 9 in the lobby clock.

He was late for his surgery

“Doctor”! A girl’s voice.

The lift stops, head turns.

Waving hand, smiling face

“Doctor, Aarti here!”

One foot in the lift,

“Doctor, please wait!

The head turns again, forehead frowns.

People push.

The girl pushes through crowd, and panting

“Doctor, Bed 13, Ewing’s sarcoma!”

The foot withdraws

Doors close

Bells ring

Bed 13? Ewing’s, YES!

His first case of neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

A tiny hand touches the dark brown shoes

Starched hands reach out to hold

The 13-year-old,

also known as Aarti Thapa.
